Food Waste

Velo Recycling offers food waste collections to help businesses dispose of food waste responsibly while reducing costs and environmental impact. Our service also ensures your business complies with the new Simpler Recycling legislation, which requires companies to separate food waste from general waste.

Food waste should never be sent to landfill where possible. When food breaks down in landfill, it produces methane gas, which is around 22 times more harmful to the environment than CO₂. It can also create a contaminated liquid known as leachate, which has the potential to pollute soil and water supplies.

What Food Waste Can Be Recycled?

We can collect and recycle a wide variety of food waste from your premises, including:

  • Meat and fish (raw or cooked, including bones)
  • Dairy products such as eggs and cheese
  • Raw and cooked vegetables and fruit
  • Bread, cakes and pastries
  • Rice, pasta and beans
  • Leftover food from plates and dishes
  • Tea bags, tea leaves and coffee grounds

By separating your Food Waste into a separate, dedicated bin you will reduce the weight of your General Waste bin and therefore save your business money. Your General Waste bin will be lighter, cleaner and help to lower your Carbon Footprint.

How Our Collection Service Works

We supply 240 litre food waste bins, which are collected on a weekly schedule to ensure waste does not remain on site for extended periods.

To make the process simple for your team, we can also provide:

  • Kitchen caddies for easy food waste separation
  • Regular bin washing services to maintain hygiene
  • Clearly labelled containers to prevent contamination

Our aim is to make food waste recycling clean, efficient and hassle-free for your business.

Energy From Food Waste

The food waste we collect is processed through anaerobic digestion,
where it is converted into renewable energy. This energy is then used to
power homes and businesses across Yorkshire.

Did you know?

  • One tonne of recycled food waste can generate enough renewable electricity to power a house for almost two months.
  • Recycling just one plate of leftover food using anaerobic digestion can produce enough energy to boil a kettle for several cups of tea.
  • Recycling a single loaf of wasted bread can generate enough electricity to charge a smartphone over 10 times.
  • One caddie full of food waste can produce enough electricity to power a laptop for over 2 hours.
  • A handful of coffee grounds recycled through food waste collections.
can help generate enough renewable energy to power a lightbulb for 3
    hours.
  • One days separately collected Food waste from a restaurant could generate enough energy to run a fridge overnight.

By recycling food waste with Velo Recycling, your business is helping transform waste into clean, renewable energy while reducing landfill and protecting the environment.
